Classification of animals
Hi P3 Pupils,
Remember there are 4 main animal groups - Fishes, Birds, Insects and Mammals! We have read about Mammals in the previous entry. Let's take a look at the other animal groups now!
Birds
- Have feathers as their outer covering.
- Have beak/bill
- Have a pair of wings
- Have a pair of legs
- Most birds lay eggs.
Insects
- Have 3 body parts (Head, Thorax, Abdomen)
- Have 6 legs
- Have feelers/antennae
- Breathe through breathing holes.
- Most insects lay eggs.
Fishes
- Have scales as their outer covering.
- Have fins and tail.
- Breathe through gills.
- Most fishes lay eggs

Mammals

Appearance
- Mammals have an outer covering of hair or fur on their bodies. Some mammals have thick fur (tiger) and others have fine hair (humans).
Reproduction
- Most mammals give birth to their young alive. However, there are a few mammals that lay eggs such as the Duckbilled Platypus and the Spiny Anteater.
- The female mammals produce milk for their young.
Habitat
- Most mammals live on land. For example, cows, zebras and monkeys live on land.
- Some mammals live in the water such as the whale and dolphin.
- Bat is a mammal and it flies!

Living things respond to the changes around them.
Look at the video clips below. The Venus Flytrap and Pitcher Plant are carnivorous plants.
Just like the mimosa, they respond to stimuli. In this case, as insects touches the fine hairs of the Venus Flytrap, it snaps its leaves together and traps the prey. The insect's struggle will stimulate the plant to close itself even tighter. It then produces digestive acid which will first kill, and dissolve the insect's body.
The following video shows you that Venus Flytrap does not only eats insects. What else do you think the Venus Flytrap eats?
